I am so proud of this kid. We have been potty training for the past 2 weeks and he has done awesome. He really picked it up quickly. I was worried that I had waited too long. He got the pee-pee thing down right away and he even stays completely dry at night, but we are still working on getting him to go poop in the potty. For some reason he is terrified of this. I have heard this is normal, but I don't really know how to help him. If any of you have any wisdom on this, PLEASE let me know and leave a comment. I am willing to try whatever, so leave me your advice and suggestions.

Lots of yelling and screaming. No. Just kidding.
Just provide him with lots of opportunities to sit on the potty. For my kids that had poop issues, I would wait until I knew they had to poop and we would stay in the bathroom on the potty reading books and singing songs. They usually didn't enjoy the process, but after it was over, they were proud that they had done it.
I am sorry I don't have any advice because I haven't been through that yet but it is really exciting that he is getting so close!
Me again... so hey... my brother and sister-in-law did a potty "treat box" and the kids get to pick something when they go "brown." They have candy and small toys in the box. Those kids get really excited about it so maybe that is an idea.
I had to laugh when you said you thought you'd waited too long. Too long for what? So long that he'd never use the toilet, EVER. :) That'll be my strategy with Alora. Honey, go change your diaper before we go to the DMV...
Potty-training scares me.
I am the VERY last person to ever give potty training advice. Both my kids have had SUCH A HARD TIME! R. is 4 years old and still struggling! I know I shouldn't put pressure on him and stress him out but it is so hard to see him struggle with this. I think the main thing is to not make it too frustrating and just make a big deal out of it when it happens. He is finally doing much better but it's been a long YEAR! Good luck and the one thing I've learned is that it is his body and he's the only one that can decide he is ready and willing! No matter how much I WANT to make it happen, this one is all him! Keep me posted!
Bribery. Poo Poo treats seriously rule. :) ALSO We have found that it starts with infancy. We have had issues with Haley, but whenever Maleia had a dirty diaper we would tell her "good job" instead of "ew gross!" And it has been a completely different experience with Maleia. Just keep encouraging...
Hey Sarah....found your blog on mariannes/moniques.
Josh had big trouble with this...he would hold it for days which only made the problem worse. I even had to use an enema on him a couple of times. All he needs is a few successes and he will be over it. I am seriously in favor of bribing when necessary. Get him a cool new toy he has really been wanting...place it in sight but out of reach and let him know that once he poops in the potty (insert appropriate # here) times he can have it. Meanwhile treats for each little success. Its easy to wean of treats over time. Good luck!

Sarah, you know I am your LAST friend in the world to give advice on potty training. OR here's some for you "It's a nightmare that never goes away, cause guess what? When you get all proud that Andrew has got the hang of it and your in the clear. Relief right? NOPE time for the next kid." Four words for you because I have for kids. Yuck, yuck, yuck, yuck! Thanks for posting and asking for feedback cause I will be visiting this post for my own benefitting. Oh, good job to Andrew though!:)
Isabel just got potty trained too and it is so nice. She had the same problem - she could pee but couldn't poop on the big toilet. I think her problem was that she couldn't push without her feet on the ground so after a week or so I got out her little potty and she would poop in there and pee in our potty. I think she finally got the hang of pushing and now she's OK, she still likes me to help her push she says "Mom come make a mean face with me." Anyway who knows? Every kid is different I thought this day would NEVER come for us. Everyone would say to me don't worry no one goes to college in diapers but I was just worried about kindergarten :)
The only advice I have is to do some serious bribing and I don't know if that's good advice or not!
Let's see, everyone has really good advice, I got lucky, once Andrew decided he was ready, he did it all, of course, it has been a year and he STILL insists on someone going into the bathroom with him, moral support? Anyway, my sis-in-law said that if her kids pooped in their underwear, she'd make them walk the pair to the garbage and they had to throw them away, she said it worked for both her kids because they were so sad to see their FAVORITE character dirty and then gone. A little extreme, I know, but she said it worked. Good LUck!!
Sarah,
This has nothing to do with potty training, it's just that I'm only now getting back to you from your phone call (I have phone issues). Our sitter just moved away, but the Johnson's know a lot of the YW and probably have a good suggestion for you! Let me know if you find someone good (or don't, because I might steal her).
Begging. Pleading. Crying. Yeah, I tried ALL of those methods with Mayah. NONE of them worked.
In the end, the method that FINALLY worked was bribery. Well...not really, the bribery only worked to an extent. Mayah also refused to go poop on the toilet, even when I offered her a huge sack of her favorite candy for doing so (she only got 1 piece of candy for going pee). In the end, I had to threaten her with a negative consequence...and then carry it out when she pooped her pants. After a day or two of that, she finally started going in the toilet.
But yeah, I still need to get Malia potty trained. So exciting.
Hey, at least he's got the pee pee thing down! If HE has any suggestions for Jack, let me know!!
Sarah -- I 100% believe in the treat box ... BUT the KEY is... it has to have his FAVORITE treats. Benjamin LOVED jelly beans at the time he was potty training - so finger out his all time favorite that he can't live without - and it may be something new!
