It Happened......

Abby has discovered Hannah Montana and consequently Andrew has too. How did this happen? Maybe it was watching too much Disney channel. Even though they only watch Playhouse Disney, those sneaky Disney execs pump the programming full of Hannah Montana commercials and advertisements. Maybe it's because EVERYWHERE we go she is there! You can't escape the Hannah Montana/Miley Cyrus/Stewart (whatever her name is!) hysteria. Her face is on everything and you hear her name everywhere. Even just a few months ago, I myself was wondering "who is this Hannah Montana person." Abby and Andrew knew who she was before they ever knew who she was, purely because they see her face everywhere. We don't even watch Spongebob at our house. No offense to any of you who let your kids watch Spongebob. I've just never thought of it as an appropriate show for very young kids. But I am learning that whatever the oldest child discovers, quickly becomes the newest sensation for the toddlers and babies in the house as well.

So the other day Hannah Montana came on after Little Einsteins or something and my kids were starstruck. I let them watch the dang show okay. And I sat there and watched it with them. And you know what? It was pretty innocent, witty, funny and entertaining. Now, I'm still not comfortable with the fact that my oldest child is only 5 1/2 and watching a show for teeny boppers and now she wants to be a rock star like Hannah Montana and walks around singing her songs. Is this normal? Am I being a bad mom? Is this the kind of role model I want for my kids? Is Hannah Montana going to turn into another Britney Spears? Please tell me what are your thoughts on this?

Wanna know a secret? Cheyenne loves Hannah Montana's tv show, as much as he loves Suite Life of Zach and Cody. I, myself, prefer Wizards of Waverly Place.

I think that as long as you aren't taking Abby to any concerts and you shield her from the odd media goings on of Miley's personal life a show on Disney is pretty clean.

Yeah, while shopping today Hallie wanted to buy Hannah Montana's hair. It was on sale she said. However, she's never seen the show. Needless to say the marketing gurus, seriously know what they're doing!

My kids are also a no Spongebob Family. But, they DO watch the most dangerous sharks on the planet, which is worse?? :)

Miss you.

I don't think it'll be a big deal. Before she blows into some big Britney drama, the kids will be into someone completely new.

The whole "Hannah Montana craze" is a funny thing at our house. If you even say Hannah Montana or we walk by something at the store that has Hannah Montana on (really hard not to), Taylor rolls his eyes. He was so annoyed in school this last year with so many girls talking about and wearing Hannah Montana stuff so much. I think it's hilarious that he cares enough to roll his eyes.

Guess what, Andrew watches Hannah Montana sometimes, we used to watch playhouse disney all the time and I'd get busy and not turn it off and yup, there'd she be. I'm hoping she doesn't turn out like Brittney Spears, because her show is cute and we'll watch it with him now and again, but like you, he is only 4, shouldn't he be into Blues Clues and Little Einsteins, not Pokemon and Transformers?

I think it's ok if you watch it with them. I have never seen it. But I love the way Kort says her name "Hanna mintana" He has cousins that are into her..Yay!

But everyone of my kids that can talk coming running up the stairs to tell me the naughty show is on AKA "Spongebob" I cannot stand his whinning and wearing briefs. Yeah, that's exactly what I want my kids to mimmick!! It was made especially for kids. You have to be aware of what they are watching that is for sure!

And something to think about too is the Hannah Montana show will still be the same even if she turns into someone like Britney Spears. Hannah is a fictional character, so I think you are alright. But what do I know, we only do boys and Tommy got mad at me for walking too close to the princess area in Target....

I too am wrestling with what my kids are exposed to. I am a bit of a minimalist and at times anti the commercial culture we live in. There are so many better things to fill you time with and I don't want my kids sucked into that. On the other hand I don't want them to be too sheltered, so I talk to Lana a lot about what is good or bad and why. I like to encourage the innocence of youth while promoting thoughtful choices. It sounds like a lot for a kid but they're never too young to learn! I may just be an idealist and when my kids get a little older the reality may hit me hard. No one ever said raising kids was easy!

I watch Hannah Montanna all the time! I love it. My kids haven't caught onto it yet, but I have let them watch Spongebob :0 :)

I am living the exact same experience with Grace. I have been trying to limit her tv time, because she loves that show. And it is pretty innocent, but I'm the same as you...not so comfortable with my little girl trying to emulate Hannah Montana. And, yes, Holly's totally into it, too since Grace is. Yesterday at Target, Grace was begging me for a Hannah Montana t-shirt. She literally said, "but Mom, everyone in my school has them." (imagine it said in a very whiny voice.) Of course, I said, "who cares what everyone else has?! You aren't getting it." I have issues with t-shirts (or lamps, binders, bedsheets, etc.) with pictures of characters. Anyway...I'm with you. How do we keep our kids from being sheltered, but at the same time keep them innocent?

I'm with Crystal. Wizards of Waverly Place is a cute show.

As much as I don't want my 2 year old to watch spongebob or any of those older kid cartoons, she gets it anyway. With three older siblings (13, 10, 7), It's impossible to prevent that stuff from getting through.

It's not the commercialism that bugs me, it's the potty talk and sassiness that I don't like. The older kids can handle it, but not the younger ones. That's where I draw the line.

Be glad that your kids are all still young and haven't been 'contaminated' by school.

Sarah! I have been trying to find your info to see if you are still in the area. Why didn't I think to check your blog? Email me your info so I can call and catch up. Cutesy kids btw. Annerang@gmail.com

Haha! I love Hannah Montana, but I can get sucked into pretty much anything they play on Disney or Nickelodeon, even Spongebob. I try to draw the line at the cartoon network, but even that line grows thinner. They play Tom and Jerry! I miss that show and the kids LOVE it. I don't think I will ever understand the Pokemon phase, though. Japanamation card fighting is out!
