So this past week I took the kids to the library to check out some books and movies. We came across Pollyanna which was one of my favorite Disney movies when I was a kid. I decided to check it out and watch it with Abby and Andrew. Let me tell you, it brought back so many memories. It is such a great show and it has a wonderful message. I highly recommend watching it again if you haven't seen it in a long time. Some of the scenes get a little bit long and boring for the kids, and they didn't totally get everything that was going on, but as long as I explained to them what was happening, they were totally enthralled. What I loved was the message that any one person can make a difference in the lives of so many people just by having a positive attitude and outlook on life. My kids loved it because that person was a kid just like them and I think it made them feel like kids can make a difference. They have a fresh perspective and they have the ability to teach and have an impact on us (sometimes grouchy) adults. By the end of the movie, I was in tears. It is a very moving little story. Go and check it out.
Perry and I always joke about how when we were little, I was at home watching Punky Brewster and Mr. Belvedere, and he was watching M.T.V. already. Let's just say, being the youngest, he didn't have much of a childhood growing up with a bunch of teenagers in the house. So all the old Disney movies that I watched as a kid, he never saw because he was probably watching whatever his older siblings were watching. So, so sad. :) Anyway, here are a couple more of my childhood favorites. If you have any favorites, share them in the comments.
The Gnome Mobile. A Claflin family favorite. We could watch it over and over. Remember the scene where all the female gnomes try to catch Jasper so they can be his wife? Classic!
Savannah Smiles. I am not sure why we ever saw this movie, but we always rented it and I think we liked it because we were fascinated by the idea of being abducted. Even though we knew it would be bad and scary, there was still a chance that you may like your abductors and they might be nice to you if you are as cute and lovable as Savannah in
Savannah Smiles. Cute show. And last but certainly not least.........
The Watcher in the Woods. Another Disney classic. I get goosebumps just looking at this picture. What were my parents thinking letting us watch this! It was such a freaky show. But it had some great lines in it that my siblings and I still recite and make fun of to this day. "NERAK!"

Sarah, STOP IT! You did not pick my favorites. The gnome mobile was my FAVORITE for a long time. "In the gnome mobile the gnome mobile, riding along in the gnome mobile" Thanks for getting that song stuck in my head. As for the Watchers in the woods. Scared me to death...but I watched it more then once...why? Must have liked to be scared stiff. The mirror scene gave me just a few nightmares. Such a fun post!! I am going to have to go back and watch "Pollyanna, to see if it makes me cry as an adult". I just remember wishing I could have all her dresses that she got:) Some how missed the message. So fun.
That was so funny to read because I used to watch every single one of those. I was just watching Mary Poppins with my girls this week thinking to myself "we should watch Babes in Toyland and Pollyanna soon." You're hilarious. One of these days we really will talk on the phone, in the mean time we'll just have to settle for blog stalking each other. Best of luck in GA, can't wait to see the pic's of the move.
Oh Sarah, I loved Polyanna and The Gnome mobile. Oh my goodness what memories! I also loved the original parent trap and Blackbeards ghost....My kids have been loving the Beethoven movies. Good luck with the move!
I haven't seen Savannah Smiles, but the rest were classics in my house too. Every Halloween to this day we try and get watcher in the woods, but someone always gets to it first. We really loved the version of Pollyanna called Polly that starred the little girl from the Cosby show. It was a musical. I can still sing all the songs from it. Good memories!!
Wow, those are a blast from the past! The Gnome Mobile was definitely a must--I think it was my mom's favorite because she'd rent it every time. And yes, the song is now stuck in my head too.
My favorite's included The Ugly Dachshund, Blackbeard's Ghost, and Mr. Limpet. We also used to watch all my mom's old Rogers and Hammerstein musicals.
BTW...have you seen the previews for Mama Mia? That looks like your kinda movie. The preview makes me want to dance. :P
Yeah... what were mom and dad thinking with "Watcher in the Woods"... it is such a dark/freaky movie.
Um, you are forgetting Parent Trap, Adventures in Babysitting, The Dark Crystal, Never Ending Story...
The only one I saw was Pollyanna!!! So fun, now we have some new ones to check out!
I LOVED the Watcher in the Woods. We should rent that and watch it at my house with all the lights out. Then we could go walk in the woods behind my house and try to freak ourselves out. What do you think?
Oh my goodness! I didn't think anyone who wasn't a Fillmore had EVER seen Savannah Smiles. We keep giving it to each other for Christmas as a joke! That and The World's Greatest Athlete. Well I hope you enjoyed it.
The movie, Watcher in the Woods scared me as a little kid, pretty badly. To this day, i do not like to watch it. That and, have you seen Time Bandits? My brothers loved watching that when i was little, and it freaks me out still. Bunch of wee people coming out of my closet. One of my favorites to watch, and i still do, is The Labyrinth.
Although, i wonder if this movie makes MY kids scared and they will one day wonder what i was ever thinking letting them watch it?
The Gnome Mobile, The Gnome Mobile, riding along in the Gnome Mobile...hahaaha, i love it!
Do you remember the chain link incident?? oh boy...the flying fish, we were FREAKED!!
LOL! I loved all those old shows. We're slowly bringing the kids up to speed. Lately, they've watched the old Ninja Turtles movie and right now they have The Sandlot. I loved Watcher in the Woods! Is it still scary? I haven't seen it as an adult.
I love the Gnome Moblie! We were going to meet up with Craig's brother and his family this weekend in the redwoods but we had to cancel because of all the forest fires. I think the reason I've always wanted to see the Redwoods is because of that movie.
I totally agree! I had the same experience as Perry with all older siblings and there is something lost in the beauty of youth when you're the youngest! I LOVE Watcher in the Woods too and want to show it to my kids and FREAK THEM OUT!!!! Maybe I'll wait a few years cause that would just be mean!
Sarah, it is so funny how we grew up so much alike. I just bought the gnome mobile the other day for the kids and was so excited to see it myself. Ryan thought I was crazy buying a movie named that, obviously he hadn't ever had that song stuck in his head. When we were little watcher in the woods was the scariest movie I had ever seen. I need to watch it again I haven't seen it forever. Did you also enjoy, the last unicorn and the never ending story?
